My guess is that Michael’s response will be something along the lines of, “I mostly agree but you’re ignoring or greatly downplaying the contribution of terrible lefties to this current mess.” Which is both true and probably wont make you feel much better.
I voted for Obama twice and Trump twice. I’m not alone (though people who view the world in black and white have trouble actually seeing and acknowledging Trump’s overwhelming appeal to working class Americans). Thanks to Trump: out of the TPP on day 3, 1stStep Act, Platinum Plan, Lowering Drug Pricing, Right to Try, VA Reform, No New Wars, Bringing Troops Home, Bringing Hostages Home, Low unemployment, and the Abraham Accords.
https://bookshop.org/p/books/how-civil-wars-start-and-how-to-stop-them-barbara-f-walter/17121953 This book takes a lot of your points a step further from historical trends to modern indicators. It helps bring more of the relevant context together; it definitely won't help you sleep at night. But I'm more terrified by people who don't take the current threat seriously, even more scared when it's intelligent people with large platforms. Denial and normalization just paves the way for the next election Trumpists need to overturn.
Adam - I’d like to see you tackle anything around Covid deniers and anti-vaxxers. It’s a dangerous topic in my family and one I struggle with. I think you’d present a good argument. Thanks
U mention the Trump is not the disease but a symptom of a wider problem.
I would wholeheartedly agree.
the important question of course, is what is the disease? if we can answer that, we might be able to assess whether Trumpism is an existential threat to democracy or not.
in my opinion, the disease is the conditions that enabled Trump to run and win the most powerful office in the world. the materialistic culture of celebrity worship and reality television created by the media machine that also gave him a Billion dollars of free press and essentially got the man elected.
in a rush to push their ratings upward, they completely bought into Trumps political Kayfabe hook, line and sinker. they were delighted for him to play the foil to the pearl clutching liberals every night on MSNBC.
meanwhile, this media circus gets the attention of a lot of disenfranchised, working class people(the same folks the Dems abandoned 30 years ago) who enjoy seeing Trump poke a stick in the eye of the establishment elites.
the results were predictable.
in essence, The Disease that created Trump could be said to be a backlash against The Mainstream Media/Political establishment that also helped create him.
Read some Victor Davis Hanson to understand why you don't understand Trump's attraction. And yes Trump has created a new type of Republican. The Democrats are in league with the biggest businesses in the world. The definition of fascism.
This should be an essay entitled "Why I'm afraid of Donald Trump." We're afraid of the uncertain and the unknown. His world is different than yours, and that's OK. He followed through on all his promises, his policies were exactly what America needed, and needs again if you're alive, and was a wonderful leader who was and is still receiving malicious, and demonstrably false, talk about him.
💯% wrong, Trump and “trumpism” is purely the person and movement to take back this country. For years now, maybe decades we have had a uni-party running our country into the ground! The establishment #RINO’s have been a controlled opposition. Trump keeps his promises, the first in a long time, The time is #NOW to stop the spending of money we don’t have. Close the purse strings, get the #DEBT under control! We are headed for world war lll, and a depression! House and Senate seats need term limits, no more career politicians, these positions should be #Fiduciary positions!🍊🍊🍊🤔
I'm a fan of interacting with people with whom I don't share views. Not a fan of ad hominem or invective as both seem to me to invalidate the argument. Also like to define terms so I know how they're being used. I wonder what is meant by "Trumpism."

so, did Mr. Moynihan ever respond?
I was looking forward to the discussion...
